The Fairtrade Foundation had been extremely successful in raising awareness in the UK on the need for and the benefits of fair trade: UK sales of Fairtrade products have more than doubled every two years since 2000. With the Fairtrade movement gaining momentum in the UK and the increasing need in the developing world to address conventional trade failure, the Foundation came to Impetus. We hoped that by bringing in additional business expertise we could help the Foundation to clarify its vision for growth, distil it into an actionable strategy and help them face the challenges that any rapidly growing business faces.

Work closely with the Fairtrade Foundation to:
- Develop a strategic plan
- Identify the key areas for growth for a three-to-five year period

- The first stage of the Fairtrade Foundation’s strategic review has been completed. The new strategy was officially launched during the 2008 Fairtrade fortnight. The strategy is bold and ambitious, reflecting the outstanding success of Fairtrade in the UK market and the significant opportunities available to Fairtrade to broaden its scope.
- The main input into the strategic review was an in-depth analysis of the Fairtrade Foundation’s current position in the UK retail market and the specific opportunities for further growth. This work was carried out by the Impetus team, providing support to the Chief Executive and participation in Fairtrade’s steering group. Impetus brought in OC&C Strategy Consultants, a key Impetus corporate partner, to help with the strategy review.
