1. Coverage

Impetus backs charities and social enterprises that are achieving clear outcomes with significant numbers of economically disadvantaged people.

2. Ambition

We support charities and social enterprises that have the ambition to effect far reaching change for the economically disadvantaged.

3. Outcome focused

We seek charities and social enterprises that help the economically disadvantaged tackle challenging issues such as long-term unemployment, persistent offending, violence and addiction with the aim of:

• improving their levels of education, attainment or achievement and thus
• achieving higher levels of self-sufficiency and employability

4. Backing the Chief Executive

The quality of leadership - we seek Chief Executives with the vision, energy, enterprise and determination to motivate their teams and help economically disadvantaged people realise their full potential.

5. Supporting the whole organisation

We seek to back a team and their vision. We provide funding and expertise to support the development of whole organisation and not just a particular project or activity.

6. Distinctive and good prospects for sustainability

We target our support at charities and social enterprises which are distinctive and have strong prospects for success and sustainability in their sector.

Structural criteria

1. Turnover £250k+

2. Operational and with audited accounts for at least 3 years

3. HQ and significant portion of management in England with a small number operating internationally

Exclusions

1. Focusing on animals, culture and heritage rather than people

2. Aiming to proselytise and convert people

3. Substantially/exclusively working in the areas of research or advocacy (unless impact on people’s lives is demonstrable)
