We are delighted to announce Susannah Hardyman as the new CEO of Impetus.

Currently the founder and CEO of Action Tutoring, Susannah has built and led one of the UK's leading charities focusing on school attainment, supporting thousands of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve academically to enable them to progress in education, employment or training and tackle the attainment gap. In 2022-23, Action Tutoring delivered approximately 7,000 tutoring courses to just over 6,000 pupils, with just under 70% eligible for pupil premium.

Action Tutoring has been a key delivery charity in the Impetus portfolio for over a decade and we have first-hand experience of Susannah's ability to deliver and grow. She brings substantial leadership experience, having grown her team to over 70 people, with the involvement of over 1,800 active volunteer tutors a year. She has built an organisation driven by meaningful impact and overseen substantial growth in recent years. She has also been a powerful voice in the sector calling on the Government to unlock resources to deliver high impact, evidence led interventions for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

During and following to the pandemic, Susannah was a vital part of the delivery of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP), and a Chair of the Fair Education Alliance’s tuition advocacy group which has continued to make the case to Government for the NTP to carry on supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to catch up after the lost learning of the pandemic.

Susannah said:

I am excited about joining Impetus at this critical time as we begin to deliver our new strategy. Working alongside Impetus for over a decade I have seen first-hand how the unique combination of significant, long-term unrestricted funding and the embedded support of the Investment team can help charities to increase their impact and grow their reach, transforming the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and how we can reach many more young people by advocating for policy change. Impetus is impact philanthropy at its best.

Hanneke Smits Impetus’ Board Chair said:

"I am delighted that Susannah expressed an interest in the CEO role at Impetus. She has the unusual experience of having worked with Impetus as a charity CEO and I am excited to see how she will drive growth at Impetus to increase our impact on young people's lives. I am confident as outgoing Chair that Impetus will have the right leadership in place."

Susannah will take up her new position in January 2025.
